One way we are collecting raw data from folks we meet on our westward road trip is through our camera project. We left with 16 kits of disposable cameras paired with booklets that describe our project and list 5 categories for our chosen collaborators to consider as they shoot images: home, work, play, food and aspirations/inspirations. We have given prompts to encourage thought on the topics, but directed people to interpret these concepts as they wish, keeping in mind “The American Dream.” The kits are addressed with postage and all set to drop in the mail. Once the cameras are returned we will develop the images and use them as inspiration to further our questioning of What is American. You can find these folks mentioned in our daily posts, and eventually this page will also record their collaborative efforts.

this is addictive reading–I’m supposed to be doing laundry! You guys are better than Calgon. Looking forward to the rest of the journey… love, Heather
Camera Collaborations: What a great idea! Your photos are so personable and I’m thoroughly enjoying the accompanying text. You make me feel a part of your travels. The following reminds me of you: “The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.” ~G.K. Chesterton
Thank you for the Chesterton quote, Kathy. It sums up just what we were hoping to do with this trip, and you know, he is one of my favorites.
